CASSANDRA SIMONS

WHAT DREW YOU TO KATONAH YOGA?

The conglomeration of practitioners, working together in a collaborative way was unlike anything I’d ever experienced in a yoga class before. As an artist and performer, this was such a refreshing experience, to find a group of people working together creatively toward a common goal. This material helps it’s students really drop into their bodies. We live in such a cerebral society. The practice encourages the use of imagination to bring awareness to the unconscious body and the insights there are truly amazing.

HOW HAS KATONAH CHANGED YOUR PRACTICE & TEACHING?

The tools of this material have woken up my personal practice. On the mat I’m encouraged to traverse the landscape that feels uncomfortable, the road less traveled and to make the journey from willful to willing. I’ve been able to develop techniques to take power over my circumstances and ownership for my body and life. As a teacher, these same tools have allowed me to hone my vision to best aid and assist my students. Through the material I can demonstrate to my students why we do the poses we do, granting them purpose and determination to keep showing up to do the work.

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN KATONAH CHANGE STUDENTS?

The physical transformations are easiest to spot from the outside. When a student truly fits themselves for the first time or feels the magic of proper alignment, it’s a tangible moment of recognition. Their breath kicks in, along with a rush of clarity and a new understanding of their own capabilities and potential. The internal shifts are more subtle, yet arguably more profound. Students start to notice this material showing up in the way they interact with the world around them. Their curiosity flourishes. They look at their own injuries or ailments as information or a source for growth rather than a limitation. They become more dynamic, well rounded, buoyant, and grounded. It is just so fun to watch.

Help yourself take accountability for your body and your circumstances, move away from bitterness and toward joy, and start to feel at home in your own body.
